Best Kajabi Alternative In 2020 (Cheaper And Easier To Use)

The Best Kajabi Alternative You’ll Find in 2020

In the quest for knowledge, there are many places you can learn more about your chosen subject online.

Whether you want to learn how to build eco-friendly irrigation systems or how to boil an egg, you likely turn to the internet for your answer

When you come online for knowledge, where do you go?

Many people go to Youtube for free information, and some use paid platforms like Udemy for courses on a variety of subjects

If you’re on the other side of the fence and you’re looking to create a course of your own, you might have heard of some of these popular course creation platforms

  • Udemy
  • Systeme.io
  • Teachable
  • Thinkific
  • Kajabi

All of these platforms have a lot of things in common, but in this article, we’re focusing on all the pros and cons of Kajabi and why someone might want to look for the best Kajabi alternative in place of the platform

I’ve helped a lot of people with unbiased reviews about online marketing platforms, and this review is no different.

Let’s take a deep dive into everything you need to know about Kajabi.

By the end of this article, you’ll be able to make an informed choice on the best course creation platform for your needs.

1. What is Kajabi?

Kajabi logo

Kajabi logo

At the most basic level, Kajabi is a course creation platform that allows you to create course content, build a website to support it, and sales funnels to market it

They offer the platform as an all-in-one solution to your “personal branding” or course creation needs

They even got some big names like Brendan Burchard to help promote it

With Kajabi, you can host your online courses and deliver them to your students in a way that looks professional and authoritative

In addition to building a course, you can also create a full website, blog, sales funnels, and email marketing automation

They do pack a lot into their platform, so it’s worth a look.

Their main sales pitch is that you can use Kajabi for all your needs instead of having to bundle a bunch of other services together.

For example, if you were to use Teachable, you would only have a course creation platform and a sales page

Using Teachable, you would have to get a funnel building platform, maybe Wordpress for your website and blog, and then something else for your email marketing

At first glance, it makes a lot of sense to go with Kajabi and get everything you need in one place.

As you would expect, Kajabi also handles all of the tech for you. You don’t need to have a degree in a programming language to know how to build a website and course with Kajabi

They make everything simple, and if you have any problems, you can reach out to them, and they’ll take care of it for you

If you understand and know anything about online course creation, you’ve likely heard of the term course “marketplace” as well

You’ll be happy to know that Kajabi is nothing like that. You have complete creative control over what you put in your course and how much you charge for it.

You can also create your own policies that students must follow to enter and make it through your course.

2. Comparing Kajabi and Systeme.io

In this section let’s take a look at what both of these tools offer and how they stack up to each other

2.1. Course creation

Course creation

The reason you’re here is that you want to know more about course creation platforms, so let’s start with that.

Both Systeme.io and Kajabi makes it simple to upload content and break it down into easy to digest sections for your students

Kajabi offers “blueprints” for you to follow based on the type, of course, you want to create.

Some of these are:

  • Mini-course
  • Online course
  • Evergreen training
  • Membership
  • Community
  • Coaching program
  • Start from scratch

These blueprints make it easy for you to structure your course based on things that have worked in the past

Also, know that you don’t have to follow these blueprints exactly, they exist to give you a starting point if you’ve never created an online program before.

Once you’re inside and ready to upload content, you’ll have a few different areas to fill

First, you’ll select what form of media you’re using for the course. (video or assessment)

You can title the lesson, throw it in a category, and include some text below to provide students with information or resources they might need.

If you plan on using video content in your course, they offer unlimited Wistia hosting with all their plans, so that makes it easier to create and upload videos.

Something troublesome, though, is the fact that you can’t have multiple forms of content in one lesson. You can only have one video or one assessment per lesson.

This factor is one area where Systeme.io steps up and offers a bit more

With Systeme.io, you have the choice of uploading whatever type of content you want to each lesson

You can combine videos, written lessons, and include PDF files and additional content that you think will help your students.

2.2. Quizzes/Assessments

Quizzes/Assessments

If you’re trying to keep your students engaged rather than having them run through the course and forget about it, assessments are a great way to do that

Kajabi allows you to add tests to your online courses in a variety of formations that will help you know how well your program is getting information across

You have a lot of different formats to choose from with these quizzes as well. You can do:

  • Multiple choices
  • Essay style
  • Fill in the blank

There’s a form submission section too where you can even have students return assignments to you for your feedback.

The one cool thing we realized with Kajabi is that their platform is not limited to “self-education” style learning

The only big downside to this point is that you cannot create certificates with Kajabi

With Systeme.io, you also have the choice of inputting quizzes and other forms of assessments you can use to gauge how well your students are catching on.

This is powerful because it helps you not only understand your students but to know if you’re conveying your message in a way that is easy for them to absorb.

2.3. Automation features

Automation

We all love to hear about how we can automate anything, right? Both Systeme.io and Kajabi allow you to automate certain things that generate triggers inside the course platform.

For example, if someone hasn’t been active in the course for a few days, you can set up an automation to send them a reminder, so they come back.

In addition to reminders, you can even send out rewards and bonuses as incentives for people completing lessons. If someone makes it halfway through the course, you could send them an ebook or swipe file

With Kajabi, you can set up an automation that triggers if someone fails an assignment too many times.

They could receive some additional learning material that will help them through the course. These are all great incentives when you’re trying to sell the course too

Systeme.io allows you to tag leads so you can organize your automations as well. You’ll select specific triggers that apply to each list and then create rules to follow.

Once you have the trigger and the rules, you can apply them to the list, so the workflow is simple and automated

The great thing is that Systeme.io gives you these automations in their starter package while Kajabi requires you to upgrade to a premium package to receive a lot of their automation tools

3. Site creation

Site creation

It wouldn’t be an all-in-one platform if you couldn’t create a website with Kajabi too

Let’s take a look at how Kajabi and Systeme.io help you design, customize, and push your website to the masses.

3.1. Hosting

Hosting

As with most web creation tools, they offer free hosting

You’ll get a website.mykajabi.com or something similar to that.

Of course, that works, but if you want to build trust in an audience, you’ll have to purchase your own domain anyway

Where the upside comes in here is that they offer a free SSL certificate, which is highly critical to developing trust with visitors and search engines

With Systeme.io you have to upgrade to the “webinar” package which is a step up from the basic.

When you do this you get two free custom domains included.

3.2. Themes

Themes

Both Kajabi and Systeme.io allow you to install themes on your website. This aspect of designing your site is essential to its overall appearance, and with that comes the trust factor as well.

Over time it looks like Kajabi downgraded the themes they offer, though, and they use something called layout presets. There are six of them available, and they provide a decent design and appearance.

Systeme.io offers plenty of themes for you to choose from and many of them have already received testing so their proven to convert

You can choose the theme and template you want and then go in and customize it using the page builder

3.3. Page builder

Page builder

The biggest thorn in your side is dealing with a clunky page builder when you’re trying to build a website

I have used them all and tested every page builder on the market so I can tell you first hand that Kajabi’s page builder is nothing out of the ordinary

It’s a standard drag and drop builder that makes it easy for you with different layers and sections outlined on the side of the screen.

Many sections have a purpose, and once you install them onto the page, you’ll have to fill them in with whatever type of media they are. (video, spreadsheet, photo, pricing, etc.)

Modifying and editing the elements on the page is easy with the drag and drop, and everything is mobile responsive

You’ll have the choice of hiding or showing some aspects on mobile that might not look right. You can also preview the mobile view from the dashboard

3.4. Site flexibility

While Kajabi does offer the ability for you to create a website, it’s more geared towards promoting your online course rather than being an independent website.

Systeme.io provides you with flexibility when creating your site because it’s a lot more than a course creation platform

With Systeme.io, you have the choice of creating a blog, eCommerce store, digital product store, and frankly anything you want to sell.

4. Marketing features

Marketing

Okay, so let’s recap for a second. We’ve talked about everything that Kajabi and Systeme.io can do as a course creator and website builder

Now, let’s talk about how you’ll market your course using these tools. As I said in the beginning, Kajabi advertises itself as an all in one platform, which means you can do all three of these things on the platform

Both tools make it easy for you to create, promote, market, and scale your online brand or business.

4.1. Creating an offer

An offer

The first thing you’ll do once you’ve created a course is build an offer

Your offer is essentially how you plan on structuring payment of the course and for how much

You have a few choices:

  • Subscription-based (monthly, weekly, yearly)
  • One time fee
  • Set up fee upfront with a different monthly subscription

There are a few different ways you can customize this, but I think you get the point.

This factor is the main thing that separates platforms like Kajabi and Systeme.io from marketplaces like Udemy

You have complete freedom over what you do with your course because you’re responsible for doing all the marketing for it.

Within that offer, you have a few more customizations as well. You can choose to bundle multiple courses together and control which comes first.

You can also restrict access to specific course content and drip it out to them as you feel necessary.

4.2. Building your sales funnel

Sales funnels

Moving forward with the all-in-one pitch, you can create a sales funnel like Clickfunnels with Systeme.io and Kajabi

Systeme.io is a bit easier to use because their drag and drop builder is simpler and more functional

If you don’t have any experience using a funnel builder, you’ll appreciate how simplistic Systeme.io

While there are still plenty of options and customizations to choose from, it doesn’t feel as clunky as Clickfunnels and Kajabi.

With Kajabi, you’ll choose from a few different style “blueprints” again:

  • Freebie
  • Sales Page
  • Product Launch
  • Zoom Webinar
  • Free Book
  • Coaching Campaign

Once you select a blueprint, you’ll have everything you need installed into the funnel for you. If you’ve ever used Clickfunnels, you’ll realize this is a lot of the same things you’ve seen before.

When everything is installed, you can then go into each step of the funnel and fill in the blanks.

If you don’t like something about the blueprint, you can get rid of it and add something in its place

You can do all of this directly from the sales pipeline builder, which makes the whole process that much easier

A considerable part of building a sales funnel is being able to test even the smallest details. Both Kajabi and Systeme.io allow you to do that

Systeme.io doesn’t offer A/B testing for their starter package, but even an upgraded option is still much cheaper than Kajabi

That said, Systeme.io tracks more of the information you’re looking to understand, like enrollment and sales for each individual funnel.

4.3. Email marketing with Kajabi

Email marketing

Kajabi and Systeme.io both offer email marketing tools to help you build a list and market to them as well

Overall, I found both tools to do a lot of the same things. The one huge advantage of Systeme.io is the sheer amount of contacts and active members you can have moving through your funnels.

If you’ve ever created an email marketing campaign before you understand how many touches you need on your leads before they even think of converting.

That's where the 10,000 email subscribers with Systeme.io will come in handy.

For a fraction of the cost of Kajabi, you’re getting unlimited funnels, emails, and nearly unlimited leads until you’re willing to upgrade for a small cost

Both tools allow you to create automated email sequences and segregate lists as you would with any other email marketing tool.

You’ll divide people by tagging them and putting them into a specific list. Once they enter that list, they’ll receive individual newsletters and emails based on the list they’re in

With Systeme.io, it also helps to create lists based on their step in the funnel. You can do all of this automatically by setting it up so when someone enters the funnel, each step they take triggers a new tag

For example, when someone enters the funnel, they might go into a sales tag, but when they purchase the course, they’ll go into a student tag until they finish it

One big downside I have with Kajabi is that you cannot set up timeframes for emails, only action-based triggers

For example, you couldn’t set it up where you would automatically send an email ten minutes after someone purchases your course

With Systeme.io you have the freedom to customize your triggers based on time frames and actions

5. Kajabi pricing

Kajabi pricing

Let’s get to the topic on everyone's mind, price. You want to know how much it’s going to cost you and the bad news is, it’s kind of a lot

Here’s how Kajabi structures their pricing

As you can see, Kajabi is not cheap and not the best course creating tool for beginners

If you’re starting out with online marketing and you want to scale your business quickly, you’d be better off using a Kajabi alternative like Systeme.io and spending this money elsewhere.

Let’s take a look at Systeme.io’s pricing

Systeme.io pricing

Systeme.io pricing

As you can see from this picture, you get nearly everything Kajabi has to offer in the cheapest plan

The only reason you would have to upgrade is for webinars and A/B testing

Even when you upgrade to a higher package, you’re still paying a small portion of what Kajabi costs for the same features

6. My conclusion

If you’re trying to start a business, you’ll need to have a tool like Systeme.io or Kajabi on your side

The choice lies in your hands for which one you’ll choose. Overall, I think Systeme.io is the best Kajabi alternative for a few different reasons

First, Systeme.io is easier to use than Kajabi for beginners

When you’re starting, you don’t need a lot of the advanced features. You want to get a website up, set up some funnels, organize your email marketing, and automate some things, but you don’t need much else.

The drag and drop editor of Systeme.io is also much easier to use. They make it simple by keeping the interface clean and easy to understand.

Systeme.io also offers training material throughout every step of the way to help you better understand what the next step is

As for price, you can get all the features of Kajabi and more for a fraction of the cost

With Systeme.io’s basic plan at $27 per month, that is over $100 less than Kajabi

To make this even more apparent, you could upgrade to the most expensive Systeme.io plan, and it would still be cheaper than the lowest Kajabi payment plan

Finally, automation is what scales businesses, and with Systeme.io, you don’t need to upgrade to get the best features

Even at their basic plan, you still get all the automation you need including drip campaigns, autoresponders, email triggers, lists, and more.

Everything is packaged into an easy to understand dashboard with plenty of training so you can pick up on it quickly and get right down to business.

There is currently a lot of buzz surrounding Systeme.io, and I believe it’s for a good reason.

The people who switch from Kajabi to Systeme.io are happy they did so, and for that reason, I believe you will feel the same

7. How to get started with Systeme.io
