Even if you’ve never heard of Leadpages before, we can almost guarantee you’ve experienced a Leadpages landing page or popup before while browsing the internet.


The likelihood is that you may not have known at the time that it was created by Leadpages.


They’re the pages and popups that feature the animated progress bar, urging you to wait with the ‘Almost There!’ note. They look pretty slick, huh?


Leadpages are a major player in the landing page builders’ game, and even praise themselves as the number one landing page builder.


As we’ve gathered, Leadpages is created to help users craft beautiful and efficient landing pages without any professional design or coding experience


With Leadpages, it’s super simple for anyone to design an attractive and professional-looking website.


So, even if you have zero skills in tech, there’s no problem.


With Leadpages, you can efficiently create a digital marketing strategy using the software’s intuitive online tools. These tools make it simple to create, publish, and update content without any fuss or confusion. 


There’s no requirement for freelancers, delays, and extra expenses.

The heart of Leadpages is the Leadpages editors, which we’ll explain in full detail a bit later. Leadpages also offers plenty of other features designed to help users build their website and improve their lead generation campaigns. 


However, as mentioned, Leadpages isn’t for everyone and we would argue that most business owners are better off opting for alternative software, even those with little to no technical experience.


So, why is Leadpages the number one landing page builder on the market if they’re not that amazing? 


Well, it’s fair to say that Leadpages owes a lot to their successful marketing strategy. Their resources, including their engaging podcasts and free marketing courses, are very useful. We’d encourage anyone to check them out.


Leadpages also offer a strong affiliate program involving big-name members such as Amy Porterfield and Pat Flynn.


But despite this, being number one in size and popularity doesn’t make Leadpages the best product out there. 


There are tons of landing page builders out there, many costing a fraction of Leadpages pricing and offering similar features.


You could say that today Leadpages is running in a competitive field, without a powerful offering.


Leadpages does, however, offer a huge list of features. Let’s go through them next.

3. What features does Leadpages offer?

While Leadpages isn’t perfect, it’s hard not to be impressed with the range of features.


They’ve designed plenty of powerful business growth tools for their platform while managing not to overcomplicate them, making them easy for everyone to use.


Let’s have a look at some of the many features that Leadpages offer.


3.1. Landing page templates

Of course, one of Leadpages’ prominent features is the landing page templates it offers for users to create a functioning and successful website.


Users have access to over a whopping 500 templates. Of these 500 templates, 200 are free and over 300 are premium templates created and sold by third parties on the site.


Interestingly enough, most of the highest converting pages were not created by Leadpages but by these third parties.


Leadpages templates are offered in a variety of categories such as a thank you page, opt-in page, and a webinar page among many others.


Conveniently all Leadpages templates are mobile responsive, so they can fit the screen size of any device.


There are two builders to create landing page templates. These are the standard builder and the newer drag and drop editor. We’ll explain more about these editors a bit later.


Leadpages templates can only be used in one of the two editors. For example, standard templates cannot be used in the drag and drop editor, and vice versa.


Of the free templates, 132 work with the standard builder and 76 for the drag and drop editor.

3.1.1. Sorting templates by conversion rates

One great feature for the landing page templates is that users can sort the templates by conversion rate.


This is because Leadpages has collected data from over 43,000 customers who have been using these templates for years. The data is analyzed to verify which templates lead to the most conversions, which is very helpful for customers to know.


However, Leadpages doesn’t provide the conversion rate percentage, the variance of conversion rates, or how long the template has been running.


While we wouldn’t expect all these details, at least some information would be useful to understand the conversion claims better.


After all, a fresh new template that converts very well won’t be able to compare to an average template that’s been running for years if we don’t know how new it is.


It’s important to note that we don’t know if these templates convert better than those from competitors, either. 


As users customize templates with copy, images, and other features, pages become very different so it’s difficult to compare.


Also, the page that captures the most lead data may not be the page that converts the most paying customers, in the end.


When we looked at the highest converting free template offered by Leadpages we felt it was pretty ugly. Not only does it look outdated, but the layout appears cluttered and borderline tacky.


This would suggest that the most attractive pages aren’t necessarily the highest converting. 


But would you use a high converting yet ugly page to represent your business? Arguably, most wouldn’t.


3.1.2. Standard vs premium templates

Most of the free standard Leadpages landing page templates look dated too. Many of them look overexposed and the templates range from looking okay looking too cluttered and untidy. Some are even hideous!


While these views are subjective, they’re validated by the fact that the highest-converting pages of all are premium and look fresh, clean, and modern. 


Overall, the premium templates appear a whole lot more attractive than the free templates. These are the templates that users create and sell on Leadpages.


Many of them feature attractive full image backgrounds and simpler designs and layouts. Like the standard templates, premium templates can also be ordered by conversion rate.


We also noticed that templates created with the newer drag and drop editor look cleaner, simpler, and generally more pleasing to look at.


This doesn’t discount the fact that busier, cluttered templates seem to convert better though!

3.2. Leadboxes

As mentioned, with Leadpages you can create popup boxes called Leadboxes. Leadboxes are slick, crisp, and professional-looking popup boxes that help gain more leads.


Leadpages allows you to create Leadboxes in minutes. The tool even comes with automatic settings that allow the popup to appear at the height of your browser’s interest. 


Yep, that’s right. As soon as your visitor shows their engagement on your page you can display an offer they can’t refuse.


Set up your Leadbox to appear when you like. This can be when a browser clicks a button or link on your page.


 It can be after a certain period of browsing. Or it could be as they’re about to click off your page in a last-minute effort to capture their attention.


You can do several other things using Leadboxes too, such as sending a lead magnet, choosing a sub-list to send leads to, and sign up webinar participants.


These can all be completed in the settings section so you can apply the changes without leaving the Leadboxes tool.


To track your visitor’s interactions with your popup, be sure to track your Leadboxes. You can analyze how long browsers keep the popup open, and how effective it is at accomplishing its goals of capturing data or gaining clicks.


You can track your Leadbox and its success with Google Analytics. With this useful feature, you can see which Leadboxes are performing successfully and which aren’t working and why. Then you can evaluate and update as necessary. 


As a tool, Leadboxes provides the right mix of power and ease of use. However, there are some criticisms of the tool too.


There’s only one style of Leadbox, which like with many aspects of Leadpages, is very limited. While we don’t need tons of Leadboxes styling options, more than one would be appreciated.


Likewise, Leadboxes is slightly outdated. While the animated progress bar was once novel, it hasn’t seen many updates since. The good news is that you can, however, customize Leadboxes in the drag and drop editor.

3.3. Landing page editor

Leadpages editors are where you edit the standard or premium landing page templates to customize them and make them your own.


This is where you make all the stylistic changes such as editing copy, adding images, and changing colors.


As mentioned, Leadpages offers two different editors. The standard editor is the main and original editor.


There are only a few customization options making it super simple to use, but also pretty limiting. As one of the main complaints of Leadpages was the inflexibility of customization, a new editor was introduced.


This is the drag and drop editor which was introduced in March 2016. While this editor allows more customization than the standard editor, it’s just a simple drag and drop tool.


However, the benefit is that it does allow users to create more unique landing pages, even without having any design or development skills.


All you must do is choose a template and edit the details using the tool as you wish. That’s it – Leadpages does the rest.


Let’s learn a bit more about each editor and how they work.

3.3.1. Standard editor

As the standard editor is very basic and easy to use, this is the most popular of the two editors. A lot of the templates offered work for the standard editor, and as mentioned, cannot be converted for use with the drag and drop editor.


While it’s quick and easy to use, this is at a cost in flexibility. Expect to create pages that are more basic with the standard editor.


For one, the styling options are very limited, to a shocking degree. Even very basic changes can be limited. For example, you can’t move or incorporate new elements or widgets.


Elements include features like headlines, Leadboxes, maps, and countdown timers. Basically, anything you might want to add to the page. So, if you like the look of a template but you want to include a map, you won’t have much luck.


There are many other frustrations and limitations too. For example, you can’t replace a video with an image.


There’s no undo button if you make a mistake – which can make things very tedious. You can only hide elements, which often leaves an unattractive gaping hole on your page.


Another significant problem is that the standard editor makes it difficult to match the page to branding and other landing pages. And as we know, nowadays a cohesive brand strategy is so important.


The whole experience of using the standard editor is generally confusing, frustrating, and tedious.

3.3.2. Drag and drop editor

After using the poor standard editor, you might expect the more recent drag and drop editor to be a huge improvement, but again we were unimpressed.


While Leadpages describes the drag and drop editor to be a tool designed for those seeking maximum flexibility to customize their landing pages, it isn’t as great as we expected it to be.


Yes, the drag and drop editor is more flexible and customizable than the standard editor. The tool allows you to add and shift elements, and there are more customization options.


However, the editor is clunky and frustrating to use too. At times, the unintuitive interface was tedious to navigate.


Leadpages was already successful and well-funded when the drag and drop editor was introduced, so we expected a better tool to reflect Leadpages’ premium prices.


Drag and drop isn’t an innovation that’s difficult to implement, and many other landing page builders have offered drag and drop features for years. 


So, you might expect that Leadpages would feature a drag and drop editor that’s smooth and works easily, rather than a clunky and awkward option.


For example, changing the size of the elements on the page isn’t an option. And featuring elements that don’t fit the page properly can make the page look untidy and awkward.


However, there are some upsides to the drag and drop editor. For example, users can customize the countdown timer and Leadboxes. There’s also an icon library.


While these editors do the job, we’d say there are smoother, more innovative, and more efficient editors on the market by competitors.

3.4. A/B testing

Another of Leadpages’ features is the opportunity of A/B testing – or split testing – landing pages or Leadboxes. However, this feature is only available to Pro subscribers. We’ll get onto the different Leadpages packages a bit later.


The A/B testing feature allows users to create different versions of pages that appear randomly to browsers. The version that performs more successfully is the winner and is the page that will be used.


While this is a useful feature, it’s important to note that it’s only available in the standard templates and editor, and not drag and drop. That means again, your options are limited.


A/B testing allows you to experiment with different variations in copy, images, and button styles which can be applied in the standard editor.


3.5. Leaddigits

One of the more original features of Leadpages is Leaddigits. 


Leaddigits is a tool that captures emails through SMS text messaging. By texting a phrase to a five-digit phone number (for example, text JUICE to 55555) customers can opt-in to your list or newsletter. 


Leadpages will then contact them via text to request their email, which customers can then text back. 


Leaddigits can also automatically collect the phone number from the lead too if you wish to keep it.


In a world where people feel increasingly more comfortable using their mobile phones, Leaddigits can be an effective method of capturing leads.


In certain situations, the use of Leaddigits can be especially useful. For example, a speaker at an event or conference can offer the audience a phrase and number to text to receive the presentation slides.


Or, a shop owner can place a phrase and number on a marketing leaflet at the till to encourage newsletter sign-ups. 


These are just a few of the many ways Leaddigits can help capture data.


And while Leaddigits won’t be used by every customer, for the ones it suits, it may be invaluable. It would be useful to check conversion rates. However, in ‘real-life situations’ it’s difficult to track.

 

Many people avoid opting in via text, as they may worry about receiving regular commercial texts or phone calls that may even charge them.


It’s also questionable how necessary Leaddigits is. Leadpages notes that Leaddigits is useful for when people are away from their computer or web browser. 


However, as most of us have smartphones to access the internet, this is rare. And if you’re not with your phone, you can’t use Leaddigits anyway.

3.6. Leadlinks

Leadlinks are unique links that you can paste into an email marketing campaign.


Once someone clicks onto the link, (for example, to register for a webinar), they’re automatically signed up without having to complete any extra actions.


Leadlinks are very powerful, as they help users collect more leads. Many people will click to register for something, but when they see they must fill in their details, decide to click off. People are lazy, after all!


By using Leadclicks, all browsers must do is make one click to register.

Now we’ve gone through some of Leadpages’ most prominent features, let’s discuss the main pros of using Leadpages. 

4.1. Ease of use

There’s no denying it – Leadpages is super easy to use. And for the average user, Leadpages is more than enough to help build a website with high-converting landing pages and Leadboxes.


All you need is an attractive and efficient landing page that will impress your audience and be easy to use.


Unless you want a more technical and customizable platform, Leadpages is more than capable of getting the job done efficiently. It doesn’t need any previous design or coding experience at all.


That makes Leadpages an ideal platform for fresh business owners and new marketers to use.


It also works well for the more experienced business owner that simply don’t have the time to spend hours coding and designing landing pages.

4.2. Saves time and effort

Going hand in hand with ease of use, another of the benefits of Leadpages is that it saves plenty of time and effort for business owners.


Like many landing page builders, Leadpages can create landing pages for different purposes swiftly and easily.


While we found the standard editor simple and basic, the pro is that with a lack of customization it makes landing pages even quicker to produce. As mentioned earlier, that does come at a cost of power and flexibility.


But if you’re familiar with the tool, a new landing page can be created in a matter of mere minutes, without the help of specialized designers or developers. 


The use of features like Leadboxes and Leadlinks also makes your marketing campaign more effective and efficient. Just think of the time, money, and effort saved by using a landing page builder like Leadpages.

4.3. Number of templates

While we have our criticisms of the standard templates, there’s no denying that there’s a huge number of both standard and premium templates available.


If you’re building a new website, there’s more than enough templates to get you started.


Whether you’re looking to create a thank you page, an offer page, or an email sign-up page, there’s a template available for almost every occasion.


There are even options available for 404 pages.

4.4. Easy integration

Leadpages is easily integrated, no matter what CMS you’re using. Leadpages supports all the popular CMS systems including WordPress, Joomla, Squarespace, and more.

4.5. Improves conversion rates

As we’ve touched upon in this review already, Leadpages offers plenty of data on their templates’ conversion rates collected from many customers over the years.


That means users can sort templates by conversion, helping them create landing pages that are more likely to convert leads.


Extra features such as Leaddigits and Leadlinks can also help increase conversion rates.

4.6. A/B testing optimization

The A/B testing feature of Leadpages is one of the benefits of using the tool.


The feature allows users to continuously improve the copy, style, and performance of landing pages. This, in turn, improves the conversion rate of landing pages too.

5. What are the cons of using Leadpages?

As we’ve touched on, Leadpages certainly isn’t a perfect landing page builder. Here are some of the cons of using the tool.

5.1. Landing page editors

As we’ve discussed, we’re not a fan of either the standard landing page editor or the drag and drop editor.


The standard landing page editor is very basic and lacks customization and flexibility. 

The drag and drop editor, on the other hand, offers plenty of issues with its drag and drop functionality. The tool is clunky to use and can slow down at times. 


Also, many of the widget boundaries are off, and on many occasions, an element will snap into the wrong spot or won’t end up exactly where you want it to. 


Also, while you can delete elements, you can be left with awkward gaping spaces that can’t be filled.


While this is frustrating on its own, it can be especially troublesome for users who are working under pressure or on tight deadlines. 


Users who are very specific about their landing page designs will struggle using Leadpages’ editors, even the more flexible drag and drop version.


The engine of any landing page platform is the editor. And if the engine – or the editor in this case – isn’t good enough, the car isn’t an option.


If you do decide to invest in Leadpages, you must be prepared for many challenges and frustrations when using the editor.


We believe that compared to many competitors of Leadpages, the two editors simply don’t stack up.

5.2. Standard templates

The standard templates are also very basic, outdated, and lack customization. Even Leadpages themselves encourage users to invest in premium templates!


As the drag and drop editor isn’t compatible with standard templates, even if you do find a standard template worth using, you aren’t able to customize it as you wish.


The premium templates are more modern and come in cleaner designs. However, you’ll have to pay extra for these, on top of an already pricey subscription to Leadpages. 

5.3. A/B testing for pro users and above

Likewise, A/B testing is a great feature that allows users to analyze which pages are working efficiently and which need more work. However, this feature isn’t available for standard users.


To make use of the feature, standard users will need to upgrade to a more expensive plan.


As mentioned, Leadpages is already pricey compared to its competitors, so it seems unfair that this feature isn’t available for standard users too.

5.4. Pricing

Compared to most other landing page builders, Leadpages certainly isn’t cheap.


It costs a minimum of $25 a month, and that’s without the advanced features such as A/B testing.

As we’ve noted, Leadpages is a pricey investment, especially in comparison to many of its competitors. 


There are four different packages, the start, standard, pro, and advanced. All offer a different number of features and come at different prices. These different packages generally suit different sizes of businesses.


If you’re happy to commit to an annual contract you can save a hefty amount on each package if you opt for a yearly subscription instead of a monthly rolling plan.


Before deciding on a package, you can always opt for a free 14-day trial. After the 14 days, your subscription will start, according to the plan and billing cycle you picked when you signed up. 


However, if you cancel before the trial period is finished, you won’t be charged anything.


This is a great way to get a feel for the platform and test out the features.

First, you’ll need to register, but this doesn’t take long. Then, you’ll enter the dashboard where you can create your first campaign. 


By default, you’re transported to Leadpages where you can start creating landing pages. If you want to explore the other features, you can access these through the navigation bar.

7.1. How to create a landing page?

Ready to start your first landing page? Click on the ‘Let’s Do It’ Button. Leadpages will walk you through the process, starting by asking you about the nature of your new landing page.


Then you’ll be given access to the available templates to choose from. If you can’t wait, you can peek at the templates directly through the navigation bar.


When you choose your template, you can select from the standard basic templates or the drag and drop templates.


The rest of the process will be determined on what type of template you select as you’ll be working from the standard editor or the drag and drop editor.


When it comes to publishing your landing pages, you can publish them on their own or under your domain name.


It’s advised you publish under your domain though, as this makes your business appear more professional. Publishing under a subdomain can potentially discourage your audience.


To publish under your domain, click on the user icon in the top-right section of the screen to open the drop-down menu. Select ‘domains’ to load the page where you can link your domain.


As mentioned, this is just a brief overview of how to use Leadpages. If you register, you’ll be given plenty of support and help to get to grips with the software, which we’ll go through next.

7.2. What support does Leadpages offer?

Building a website from scratch can be overwhelming, even with the help of an easy-to-use landing page builder like Leadpages. That’s why having an efficient and friendly support team to call on is so important.


Leadpages does offer customer support, however, priority is provided for advanced subscribers. They’re given access to a one on one quick start call, as well as useful free virtual workshops.


Those who have chosen the standard plan will need to open a support ticket or use the chat support which is open from nine am to five pm central time during the week.


The good news is that the chat support is pretty useful. The support specialists will answer even detailed questions swiftly.


When it comes to learning how to use Leadpages efficiently when you first join, you’ll be given plenty of opportunities to learn the platform from the tool, website, and follow up emails.


There are various brief yet useful onboarding videos provided via the tool to help you become familiar with the tool.


You’ll also be invited to a live onboarding webinar to explain the ins and outs of the platform.
