Email marketing is an essential part of any online business. If you’re doing business online and you’re not utilizing an email list, you are leaving a ton of money on the table.
The problem arises when it’s time for you to choose one - because there are many. When we say many, we mean many many email marketing platforms to choose from.
Each one says they appeal to a specific audience, and they have certain integrations and tools that will help certain types of businesses.
Market Heros claim to fame is that they are a “revenue-based” email autoresponder.
The company boasts that they offer some of the best open rates and opportunities to land yourself in the inbox.
Sounds great right?
Unfortunately, all email marketing software makes these claims so let’s see how some other options compare.
You get everything you need in one place, so you don’t even need integrations and all that other stuff.
Market Hero really pushes the fact that they’re the best email marketing tool for Shopify. The good thing about Systeme.io is you don’t even need Shopify because you get an online store selling platform built right into Systeme.io.
Pros of Systeme.io:
Cons of Systeme.io:
In addition, security is one of the most important subject. If you want learn how to fight hackers & bad bots, you'll need an automated security solution.
Next, let’s take a look at a popular email marketing tool that allows you to generate leads, build a list, and send email newsletters.
AWeber is great for most small businesses that aren’t looking to go overboard with their email marketing.
This tool will allow you to do all the basics of what you need to build a list and monetize it.
You can integrate this software with your WordPress website and landing page software so you can track everything and create segmented lists.
The main problem is that you still have to use other software to complete the job. Systeme.io allows you to track everything in one place and create landing pages using the same software for a simpler, more seamless experience.
Pros of AWeber:
Cons of AWeber:
When I think of email marketing tools, I immediately think of MailChimp. The clever marketing and cute logo have always stayed in my mind, and it’s a great beginners tool.
For people who have never attempted to build an email list, you might want to check out MailChimp.
That said, if we compare MailChimp to Market Hero, you might think twice. The service offers plenty of reporting and covers anything you could want to know.
You’ll get information on tracking, client segmentation, social media KPIs, and more.
They offer a free plan for 10,000 emails and 2,000 subscribers. That’s not bad, but you’ll realize that once you get past that the prices start to add up.
Where MailChimp starts to fall apart is when we come down to more complex features. The email automation tools are borderline useless.
Unless you’re a whiz, you’ll have a hard time understanding how to use them.
I’ve always seen MailChimp as a great way to start building an email marketing list, but once you are monetizing it and utilizing it to generate leads for your business, you’ll want to move onto an easier to use and more affordable service like Systeme.io.
Pros of MailChimp:
Cons of MailChimp :
ActiveCampaign is often considered the big cheese in the email marketing realm. This software is powerful, and it contains a lot of automation tools that will help make things easier and more profitable for you.
If you’re the type of person who wants to dive into the automations and learn every little detail possible, this is the software for you. You can set up any type of automation.
They allow you to do sales follow-ups, automatic segmentation, and dynamic emails.
ActiveCampaign also has a CRM built into the software so you can keep track of all the data as it rolls in.
This makes ActiveCampaign ideal for a larger scale business with a sales team. You can immediately take that data, forward it over to the sales team, and have them act quickly.
The main downside if you haven’t caught it yet is ActiveCampaign is difficult to use. This software is not beginner-friendly, and it’s highly involved.
If you’re a one man shop looking to start building a list and monetizing it, you don’t want to use ActiveCampaign.
Pros of ActiveCampaign :
Cons of ActiveCampaign :
Let’s pull things back and get a bit simpler. Market Hero claims to be the best email automation tool for e-commerce, right? Maybe they forgot about Drip.
This software is a great way to turn your visitors and email subscribers into paying customers.
Drip works so well with e-commerce because you can keep track of every little step someone takes in your store.
From the second they land on the page, to when they hover over certain buttons, to when they abandon their cart.
Every step is tracked, and you can set up unique emails to cater to that specific step.
They even have integrations that allow you to send text messages to people and Facebook messages. Drip is a bit pricey, and they only offer a 14-day free trial.
The main issue with this service is the lack of flexibility in other business niches. I wouldn’t recommend trying to use this for anything other than e-commerce.
Pros of Drip:
Cons of Drip:
I’m always a firm believer that simple is better. When it comes to email marketing tools, there’s no need to get overly complicated with features that 90% of its users won’t understand anyway.
That’s what they’ve done over at Mailerlite. They’ve built an email marketing software that focuses on the tools and features you’ll use rather than the ones they can brag about.
First off, they have a free plan that offers a lot of features.
In the free plan, you get automation tools and email editing features.
The software is easy and simple to use. Plus, they offer a landing page editor. You can use your own domain or one of theirs.
Sounds good right?
It’s great until you realize that they have remarkably low deliverability rates, lack of reporting, and limited automation.
If you’re a small business starting out with email marketing, you might find Mailerlite useful, though.
The editor is easy to navigate, it’s simple to build out automations and lists, and you can integrate everything with WordPress.
Once you understand how all of this works, you could upgrade to something more intuitive
Pros of Mailerlite :
Cons of Mailerlite:
If you’re looking for something that can compare to Systeme.io you might want to take a look at GetResponse.
This is one of the only email marketing tools I’ve seen that nearly offers everything that Systeme.io does.
This email marketing tool lets you grow your email list, build landing pages, host webinars, and more. You can do all of this from their easy to navigate dashboard.
One thing I found highly useful about GetResponse is the number of testing options they offer.
They allow you to A/B test just about everything from email templates, copy, landing pages, videos, and more.
You can embed videos into your emails and send out two to the same list to see which performs better.
As for automation, they use something called intelligent list automation where you can add many different conditions to the visitors who land on your website.
They are segmented automatically based on the actions they take on your site.
Pros of GetResponse :
Cons of GetResponse :
Finally, let’s take a look at ConvertKit. This newbie to the email marketing world vows to make email easier for professional bloggers.
They approach the more creative side of digital marketing, and they try to appeal to bloggers, podcasters, and course creators.
The main problem they have with this strategy is having a severe lack of creativity in the designs of their emails.
When I say severe, I mean they only offer three different templates, and all of them are text-based.
You would think they would offer video options, drag and drop editors, and more like Systeme.io (and pretty much everyone else).
Not to mention they cost more than ActiveCampaign and GetResponse and ConvertKit isn’t nearly as intuitive or advanced as either of those options.
I’m not sure where they got their pricing advice from, but the service is way overpriced.
On the plus side, ConvertKit has a great landing page editor to help with your campaigns, and the workflow makes it easy to move people between tags. You can quickly create segmented lists and focus down your campaigns on a specific group of contacts.
I also noticed that you occasionally need to play around with code to format emails which is another major red flag for me.
If you’re running a small business or you’re a freelancer, you don’t have time to waste. Everyone is using drag and drop editors without the need to mess with any code.
ConvertKit is simply too basic and boring to charge this much, that’s my bottom line.
Pros of ConvertKit:
Cons of ConvertKit :
By this point, you should know more than you ever thought possible about email marketing tools.
You don’t want to sleep on email because many people do, and it leaves wide-open opportunities for smart entrepreneurs who want to capitalize on their audience.
If you have a list, already you want to start monetizing that list by sending them regular emails and pushing them through your sales funnel.
If you don’t have a list, what are you waiting for? I recommend choosing Systeme.io from the list above because you get everything you need in one place.
You can go from knowing absolutely nothing about email marketing to have a complete funnel and email automation strategy in place in a matter of hours.
From there, you can start building your list, converting leads, and making sales.
