Launch Your Online Business in Just 7 Days
The key to online business success is in understanding what your customers want.
Now, for a long time, we could only operate based on guesstimates. We’d research our target audience, interview them, and then shrug, saying, “I’m 99% certain they’re going to like this.”
Sometimes this approach succeeded. More often, it didn’t bring the results we’d hoped for.
Fortunately, we live in 2021, and we have better access to data and tools that can actually tell us what our leads and customers like.
Today, I’m bringing you this Hotjar review: what is Hotjar, and how does it work?
Let’s find out!
Hotjar is a behavior analytics tool.
It analyzes your visitors’ behavior as they peruse your website; from the links they click on, to the paragraphs they dwell on.
Hotjar also shows you the conversion rate of your leads at every stage of your sales funnels.
(If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, I’ll explain a bit.)
In short, using Hotjar is like sitting beside your customers as they navigate your website,
and their journey towards purchasing your products.
Not sure what they like?
Hotjar is going to show you.
Want to implement new changes?
A/B testing them becomes a lot easier with Hotjar.
You’ll no longer have to guess what your (potential) customers like.
With Hotjar, it all becomes very visual; you can actually see the data you need to improve your conversion rate.
All in all, it’s a handy little tool hiding powerful features underneath.
Let’s find out how it really works!
Hotjar promises to help you gather all the data on customer behavior so you can see the big picture.
And it does make good on its promise with its features:
Heatmaps are visualizations of visitor activity on your website.
As you can see in the picture above, every visitor action carries a heat signature.
The more customers take action on specific parts of your site, the hotter the signature.
The first type of Hotjar heatmaps are click heatmaps.
They only monitor clicks, so you’ll be able to see where your visitors click the most.
In the image above, lots of people click on the Hotjar logo to go to the homepage, and a significant amount clicks on the sign-up buttons.
Hotjar move heatmaps track how your visitors browse, and where they linger on your website.
Hotjar understands this by tracking their mouse movements on your pages.
For example, you might spot that people are lingering on certain plans more than others.
This can be pretty handy if you want to optimize your pricing.
Finally, the third and last kind of Hotjar heatmaps are scroll heatmaps.
This is perhaps the most important heatmap for landing pages.
If you figure out that 70% of your visitors aren’t scrolling, you might want to put the most important information above the fold (the point after which the visitors have to scroll down, or the point after which the majority of visitors stop scrolling).
It can also help you optimize your conversion rate by modifying your page elements.
You might be mentioning something that’s off-putting to your visitors, which makes them stop scrolling.
And while heatmaps are the most popular Hotjar feature, they’re not the only feature that can show you how your visitors behave.
Ever wanted to be a fly on the wall just so you could finally figure out what it is that your potential customers want to see?
Hotjar makes that very, very possible.
Hotjar visitor recordings allow you to replay real visitor sessions, so you’re seeing your website through your visitors’ eyes.
You’ll be able to see clicks, scrolling, and all the points your visitors linger on.
This can help you improve your site and spot any problems before they’ve managed to affect your conversion rate.
For example, a visitor may be scrolling erratically to find information that you haven’t displayed prominently.
If you spot that happening for multiple visitors, then you know exactly what to change.
Since you can see what your visitors are doing, you can also take notes.
For example, in the image above, they noticed a visitor was pausing on certain parts of the site, and decided to test their copy.
You can also add tags to your recordings.
In general, Hotjar’s session recordings are a great way to optimize, troubleshoot, and improve your user experience.
And the best part is that it’s all happening visually.
You don’t have to code anything or spend hours analyzing reports. You just log in, and the information is right there.
As an analytics tool, Hotjar allows you to understand how your customers progress from first finding out about you, to purchasing from you based on their activity on your website, AKA: how your customers navigate your sales funnels.
In this example, Hotjar analyzes 4 pages to show you conversion and drop-off rates for every page.
A lot of people come to your homepage, and then drop off because it’s not what they want to see.
Those who stick around show interest in your product by visiting the pricing page. A significant drop-off is normal here (especially if you’re not pre-qualifying traffic).
Finally, those remaining at this point usually sign up and start using your product.
This is your sales funnel in a nutshell.
Without Hotjar, you’d have a hard time analyzing and visualizing it. But since Hotjar helpfully visualizes your data, it’s much easier to understand your stage-by-stage conversion and drop-off rates, as well as your final conversion rate.
What does Hotjar do? It provides context to your data.
You won’t only see percentages, though.
You can see the number of sessions, i.e. how many people make up that percentage.
Unfortunately, there’s a significant drawbackhere: Hotjar can only analyze visitors’ behavior on your pages.
To them, your sales funnel is exclusively comprised of website visits.
They don’t pay attention to traffic sources, or your conversion methods.
Yes, you can technically proceed to heat map view, but understanding how every element on your page (e.g. pop-ups, up-sells) affects your ultimate conversion rate won’t be easy.
However, when paired with systeme.io, which helps you create an entire sales funnel - step by step, Hotjar can work great!
Forms are one of the most important parts of your lead generation process. And without leads, you can’t convert, so forms’ significance cannot be overstated.
In order to help you understand and optimize your sign-up and lead gen forms, Hotjar offers form analysis.
You’ll be able to see engagement related to your forms, as well as specific fields.
For example, folks might be really interested in filling out the first two fields (their name and email address), but they might not want to fill out other fields (e.g. industry, occupations, etc.).
Without Hotjar, it’s hard to understand which fields are problematic and should be removed, or addressed differently.
You can just watch your sign ups stagger until the point where you’re not getting enough leads.
But with Hotjar, you know exactly what to improve about your forms to attract more leads.
Hotjar form analysis really dives in deep into how visitors perceive your forms, showing you data such as:
And more.
So it’s definitely like being in the same room as your leads, and picking their brains for insight.
While Hotjar will help you understand what your visitors are doing, you might not always understand the reasons behind their actions.
For that, there are Hotjar feedback polls.
Astoundingly simple yet powerful, feedback polls allow you to survey your visitors while they’re still on your site.
Like in the example above, you can ask them questions relevant to their funnel stage, i.e. the page they’re currently visiting.
You can choose between a variety of questions and options for poll displays:
All in all, this is a pretty handy feature, although you could technically replace it with live chat.
And of course, just as with everything else that Hotjar offers, you’ll be able to visualize feedback and results.
At this point, you can probably see how good Hotjar is at providing online business owners with the information they need to know about their customers.
Hotjar visual feedback is a play on A/B testing.
But instead of passively monitoring metrics, you can actually ask your visitors what they think about your pages or page elements.
The feedback is easy and visual with emojis, so the process doesn’t have friction that would stop people from responding.
Of course, I recommend taking this with a grain of salt.
As they say: actions, not words.
We’re all subjective when giving our opinions. Visitors may not be consciously aware of whether your headline makes them convert or not.
But when the visual feedback is paired with heat maps and behavior tracking, visual feedback can be a powerful tool, and I love that Hotjar is offering it!
You’ll also be able to visualize your feedback at scale, understanding the general sentiment about particular aspects of your page, or your pages in general.
Hotjar is an analytics tool, after all. ;)
Finally, Hotjar also offers embeddable surveys.
After seeing the pop-up, your visitors will be able to proceed to the survey and fill it out to help you get to know them better.
You can customize your questions and formats just like with polls.
However, I have one recommendation: don’t prompt surveys for first-time visitors. Polls would work better.
First-time visitors see no reason to help you improve by volunteering their time.
It’s much better to survey people who are your loyal customers, as they’ll be more likely to think through their questions.
Conversely, first-time visitors might be annoyed to see your survey pop-up.
And with that in mind, that’s how Hotjar does it on the technical side of things! With a combination of data monitoring and surveying features, it helps you understand how to optimize your conversion rate.
Alright, that’s plenty of features!
But you’re going to need a whole infrastructure to really make use of Hotjar, especially if you’re just starting your online business.
Let’s go through the main steps you should take to improve your conversion rate with Hotjar:
First up, you’re going to need a website and a sales funnel.
And I’m not saying an informal sales funnel such as: “I guess visitors come from Google, and click on my homepage, and then the pricing page...”
That rarely works.
No, you need a system.
Or, to be more precise - you need systeme.io.
systeme.io is an all-in-one marketing platform that will help you visually build your website and your sales funnel.
systeme.io's funnel
All you have to do is pick a template or start your page and funnel from scratch, drag and drop the steps and sections you want, and voila!
You’ve got yourself a funnel you can connect to Hotjar.
Plus, systeme.io’s features also include: email marketing automation, affiliate marketing, and a platform you can use to sell your physical or digital products (eBooks, membership sites, courses, webinars).
systeme.io's workflow builder
Don’t just build your sales funnel - automate it with systeme.io
This can all cost you as little as $27/month, so you don’t have to worry about paying for different tools that will help you attract and convert customers.
You get everything you need under one roof.
When you’ve created your website, pages, and your sales funnel with systeme.io, it’s time to bring Hotjar on board!
You can integrate Hotjar with systeme.io through Zapier, or by adding Hotjar tracking code.
If you need help, you can get in touch with us.
From there, you should define your sales funnel pages in Hotjar so it can properly track what’s going on.
You’ll be asked to name and order funnel steps by providing links to the corresponding pages.
For example, the first step of the funnel might your landing page. The second, the pricing page. The third, the checkout page, and so on.
systeme.io allows you to customize all of these pages. It’s easy to optimize based on your Hotjar data.
However, keep in mind that Hotjar only tracks conversions if your visitors complete the funnel steps in order.
So if someone goes straight to the checkout from the landing page, skipping the pricing page, that conversion will not be tracked.
(Fortunately, you can track that through systeme.io.)
From there, you can use Hotjar as you normally would:
Once you’ve gauged customer behavior, it’s time to optimize and make changes; be that polls, surveys, or simply testing your page copy.
I recommend always testing one thing at a time.
For example, if you’re testing your website copy, don’t test your videos at the same time.
Similarly, try to get as much information as possiblebefore making changes.
While Hotjar does seem like a haven for everyone who’s never sure if their conversion rate is as high as possible, it’s important to stick to common sense and the rules of A/B testing.
Alright, here’s where things get a little tricky. Hotjar has a lot of pricing options!
Hotjar free plan is a great option if you’re not getting more than 2,000 page views per day.
Basically, if you’re just starting out, it’s going to serve you well.
However, there are few reporting limitations:
Still, it’s good for testing the waters!
Nomad Capitalist Live is a four-day annual conference for people who are new to Nomad Capitalist and want to learn about:
If you want to monitor more than 10,000 page views a day, you’re going to have to choose one of the Hotjar Business plans:
Your final price depends on the number of page views you want to monitor per day.
All the prices are per site.
If you have multiple sites, you’re going to need to sign up for multiple plans.
If this sounds like a bit too much (or not enough, limit-wise), there are a few alternatives you should consider:
systeme.io's dashboard
If you like the idea of having everything you need to run an online business in one place (starting from just $27/month), then stick with systeme.io.
In addition to helping you visually set up your website, pages, and sales funnels, systeme.io also offers:
systeme.io's sales funnel
And more!
When it comes to analytics you’d expect from Hotjar, systeme.io lets you A/B test virtually anything on your website and your landing pages.
And with powerful Google Analytics integration, you’ll know what to improve!
Crazy Egg logo
Crazy Egg is a bit more advanced than Hotjar, but it essentially serves the same purpose.
You can monitor how your visitors behave on your website.
However, Crazy Egg offers confetti reports, as well.
They help you understand the click and movement patterns on your website, which is a bit more useful for holistically understanding user behavior.
Crazy Egg plans start from $24/month for up to 30,000 page views per month, which makes it more expensive than systeme.io.
FullStory logo
Finally, FullStory is definitely one of the most powerful alternatives to Hotjar.
It monitors sentiment more than Hotjar does:
FullStory pricing is not readily available, but you can get a free trial to see how it works.
I’d only recommend FullStory if you’re already at the scale where you have a conversion optimization team that will make code and conversion work together seamlessly.
