Social media content ideas
Social feeds are the biggest room you can walk into: DataReportal counts 5.66 billion social media user identities spending over two and a half hours a day there. The room is also rented: by Meta's own numbers, more than half of what people see on Instagram is AI-recommended, not chosen by following. So every post needs a job. Below are 55 social media content ideas sorted by goal, reach, engagement, or conversion, plus a free generator and the checklist.

Social media content ideas, sorted by job
Each idea below is a post shape with a worked example, sorted by the job you're hiring it for: reach brings strangers, engagement builds the room, conversion pays the rent. The last two groups keep you original and keep you posting. One rule sits over all of them: a post with no job is decoration, and the feed has enough of that.

3-5 posts a week earns more reach per post, per BufferHow to choose social media content that earns its slot
Attention on the feed is scarcer than it looks. Five checks before the content calendar fills up.
- Accept that the feed is rented. Mark Zuckerberg told investors in April 2024 that more than half of what people see on Instagram is AI-recommended, and evidence in the FTC's case against Meta showed friends' content down to 17% of Facebook time and about 7% on Instagram. Your followers are not your distribution; the algorithm assigns reach post by post, to whoever earns it.
- Give every post one job. Rival IQ's 2026 benchmarks put median engagement per post at 0.30% on Instagram and 2.01% on TikTok, which means most posts move almost nobody. A post aimed at reach, engagement, or conversion can be judged and improved; a post aimed at 'being active' can only be posted.
- Match the format to the goal. Buffer's 52-million-post study has carousels winning engagement on Instagram and LinkedIn while Reels win reach, and Socialinsider's data puts carousels at 0.55% engagement versus 0.37% for single images. For video, front-load it: TikTok's ad research found 90% of recall impact lands in the first six seconds.
- Hold a cadence, not a platform. Buffer's 2.1-million-post analysis found accounts posting 3 to 5 times a week earn about 12% more reach per post than occasional posters, and skipped weeks drag an account below its own baseline. Meanwhile reach migrates: Metricool's 2026 study saw Instagram Reels reach fall 35% in a year while Facebook rose 51%. Repeatable series keep the cadence alive wherever the reach goes.
- Route the attention somewhere you own. Sprout Social's 2025 Index found 81% of consumers say social drives impulse purchases, and 73% will buy from a competitor if a brand doesn't respond. Social converts, but the algorithm owns the relationship until the person is on your list. End conversion posts with an owned next step: a lead magnet, a newsletter, a page you control.
The job test
Two posts from the same account, one week later.
Both posts took an hour to make. The carousel was hired for a job, engagement first, conversion second, so its saves told the algorithm to keep showing it, and its link moved twelve people onto a list the algorithm can't take away. The Friday post waved at whoever the feed happened to send by. With Instagram's median engagement at 0.30% per post in Rival IQ's benchmarks, there aren't enough impressions to spend on waving; give the slot to a post with a job.
